「ARTBOX·SPRING FESTIVAL」 Exhibition

A great place to go on New Year's Day!

A new year is upon us. We wish everybody a happy and prosperous 2021.  To celebrate the new year, HIYA will hold an exhibition, “The Rite of Spring”.  This exhibition will showcase the artworks by two renowned artists: Wayne Rhodes, a master in visual illusion arts, and Hung Chuen Wa, an expert in Chinese antique restoration. The exhibition was designed to show how artists from the Eastern and Western present different world in the form of illusions.

Wayne has exhibited his work at The Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, California 2008, 20GoTo10 Gallery, San Francisco, California, USA in May 2008, Home Gallery, Oakland, California 2008, IlluminOpArt-The Dance of Light at Phantom Galleries in San Jose, California, December 2007 and Short Mountain Sanctuary in Tennessee, USA 2005.

Born in 1950, Wayne Rhodes was raised and educated in Melbourne, Australia. At the age of 31 he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, California, U.S.A. where he lived and worked for 25 years. In 2008 he moved to Hong Kong where he is now based as a permanent resident. From his base here in Hong Kong, Wayne loves to travel throughout Asia, to Europe and to Africa expanding his cultural awareness and interest in the arts and foods of cultures.

Wayne creates Computer Generated Geometric Optical Illusions using vivid colours to stimulate the viewer’s response. His goal is to create illusions that tease the brain providing at least two options for the eyes to see and the mind to perceive. In this way at its elemental level it mirrors the illusions that life presents us with, the choices we make and the questions we ask ourselves about having made those choices and what reality really is for us.

For Wayne, like life itself, creating art is a spiritual journey. Forever present but always elusive. He uses geometric shapes for their simplicity, pure form and mathematical structure. To represent the foundation of the universe.

“Inscription and Seal Cutting” is a form of seal carving. It is also an artwork of transforming academic and classical literacy into the Artist’s individuality. The art of “Inscription and Seal Cutting” originated from the art of ancient seals. From the perspective of formality, seal art and seal carving art are no different. They are both engraving, but the essence is different.  Seal art is a practical art. “Inscription and Seal Cutting”, on the other hand, has evolved into arts purely for appreciation.

Mr. Hung Chuen Wa is recognized as one of the top experts in Chinese antique restoration.  He worked for many years in Chinese national museums.  He is a master in seal carving, mounting paintings, antique restoration, and other lost arts in repairing ancient artifacts.

Mr. Hung is a craftsman who loves and respects all ancient artifacts. He takes great care of them.
